What is Payment Gateway

A payment gateway is an interface that authorizes payments for ecommerce websites, web portals and online stores. Online users can make the payments for their purchase, through these payments ways. It can be used online and offline as well (as POS). Payment gateways takes measures to protect credit card details by encrypting information like credit card numbers, CVV etc to ensure that information is passed securely between the customer and the ecommerce owner company.

How Payment Gateways work

A customer confirms the order on the ecommerce website at the checkout or similar interface to complete the purchase. He is taken to secured payment gateway page to submit credit card number and other desired information.
The online browser interface encrypts the sensitive information via SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption.
All the details of the transaction is then forwarded to payment gateway. This is a SSL secured interface, where the online payment is processed.
When the transaction is complete and payment is processed, user gets the confirmation on successful order with an active order number.
Same information is sent to ecommerce admin interface as well. Delivery team confirms the product delivery to user (buyer).
